Ugh!

Buffett Song of the Day: Far Side of the World

Can not concentrate. Must find a way to crank this thesis out. There are so many people at school tonight that it is distracting. I woke up at 14:00, but I didn’t get in to the house this morning until 07:00 so that is ok. I am almost finished with the second chapter, three more to go! I think that I am getting sick!

Computer Hell

As I sit trying to write my thesis, this darn laptop keeps going off on me and to add insult to injury, if I can get it to turn back on again, it may chose not to boot up. I have a feeling that it is going to a long 8 hours here in the Student Lounge. Oh well…

On a lighter side, I came to a conclusion that a few years ago would have had me balling my eyes out. I found the guy that I was dating was not being totally true with me. It is a long story, but I caught him out with another girl. Really, I am not mad about this. It saves me sometime and heartache. I am really glad that I found this out now! I think I would have been angrier if I had let things go too far, but I did not. Plus, he was not that great of a kisser anyway. Here is a tip for all women out there: DON’T DATE POLISH MEN!!!

As of today I have 2 weeks to finish my thesis!! I really have to have it done before then, but I am trying to make myself feel better. The question I have is where did the time go?

Well until next time…

Ordinary Day

Buffett Song of the Day: One Particular Harbor

It was another wonderful day in Kraków. The internet was up and down all day so it made getting work done interesting. I found out today how much of a loser I am. I was running in an election for a seat on a board of this organization that I am involved with. There were two seats open, and I didn’t win at all. I only had 2 votes. That sucks! But I must admit, I didn’t have time to campaign due to this damn thesis.

As for progress on that score, I took more notes today, but have not written anything so far. I will try and do that at home where I do not have the internet. I really want to get the European Enlargement history done this evening. That is a MUST. The history concerning the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict can wait until tomorrow. I have taken over 60 pages of notes concerning those two events so we shall see where that leads. After that I will have the fun of translating German!! Oh what fun!

I got on my bike this morning and found that I had a flat tire! Urgh, one more thing that I need to do…

Warm Weather, Jimmy Buffett, and No Love from the Internet

I used to have this little tradition with an old friend in College. We were both Parrott Heads (for those of you who do not know what this term means, it identifies a person who is an extreme fan of Jimmy Buffett). We would have a song of the day. I have also discussed with another Parrott Head friend of mine, the possible use of Jimmy Buffett (hence forth referred to as Buffett) music in psychoanalysis. This would involve looking at the songs that go through head during different situations and trying to derive meaning from them. In some cases, Buffett songs pop in to my head and I can better understand the situation. Currently I have the song “If I Could Only Get it on Paper” going through my head. I know that this is directly related to my thesis!

When I first go to Poland, the song “Banana Republics” was going through my head. The specific line was: “Down to the Banana Republic, down to the tropical sun, go the expatriated Americans hoping to find some fun…Expatriated Americans feeling so all alone, telling themselves the same lies that they told themselves back home.”

Another example is (during break ups or while being ignored by a boyfriend) the Buffett song “If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me.” I think that this one is self-explanatory.
In addition, when I am pulling a long night at the computer lab another song comes in to my mind: “Kick in Second Wind”

I woke up this morning to a sunny day, granted I did not get out of bed until after noon, but that was due to my pulling a late evening to work on my thesis. I was surprised to find that I did not even need a coat, even when I was riding my bike! This is outstanding, but I know that it will not last long. It is November in Poland and the snow shall soon follow just as the Christmas shopping season follows directly after the thanksgiving turkey leftovers are put a way in the fridge.

I went to school today with every intention of working on my thesis, but the gods were against me! I like to listen to the BBC or NPR over the internet while I am writing but that was not going to happen today. I could not even check my e-mail! Some days I really am ticked off at the school. The internet went off around 03:00 in the morning (I was there working!). URGH!! I hope that tomorrow will be better. I must try to get something done, but I do not think there is any luck in that.

Until Next Time…

A Little Blue

This is going to be a wining session. I am here in Poland (is some respects the land that time forgot) alone and trying to work on the most important writing assignment in my life to date: my Masters Thesis. However, I get the distinct feeling that I am truly alone in the world. Soul searching is ahead. The time of my residence in Poland is coming to an end and I am wondering what my next step will be? Who knows?

Life at ul. Garbarska 7a

Ah how strange life can be sometimes. I am attempting to work on my thesis this evening, and I have successfully finished my first paragraph. This is an achievement since I have been going through writers block and a lack of ambition.

So that I would not be wanting for snack during this long attempt at trying to get something done, I went out to procure provisions for the evening. The one thing about being this far north is that it gets dark earlier than it does back home in Michigan. With the darkness come the drunks and prostitutes. They are a normal sight on ul. Garbarska, (my Polish friends have told me that this street is know for them throughout Krakow) but tonight they have started their activities earlier.

As for doing anything this evening for Halloween, I think that since I am in the spirit to get something done, I shall stay in and do so. I have my bike so I won’t have to call a cab to take me home if I am extremely late.

On a cultural note, tomorrow is all souls, a catholic holiday that is taken very seriously here in Poland. Everything will be closed and they are even running a special tram to the cemeteries in the area.
